Robin's Nest Barn Birdhouse

This tutorial was written for V8 but can be done in V7 as it works with the alpha channel selections. I apologize for you having to skip around a bit for the selections this is my first alpha channel tutorial.I will get better at this I wanted it in alpha channel so those with version 7 could do the tutorial. For a wonderful effect you can use the pattern cracked paint provided in psp 8 for the front shingles and sides and the doors.

1. Download tools needed and save to a file in your documents folder where you can easily locate them.

2. Open the patterns in psp and minimize for later use. Open the Alpha Channel Selections Image make a copy and close the original, for later use if needed. We will work with the copy. Name the Image and save it to file of choice . Remember to save often.

3. Leave the layers invisible until we use them. Starting on the first layer Go to selections Load from alpha channel and load 1 Barn Front Shingle.

4. Change Background fill to patterns and locate the pattern fill Front Shingles included in your zip it should be on your desktop minimized. Angle 0 Scale 50%. Flood Fill Selection. Keep Selected, Go to effects, 3D Effects and Add a drop shadow of Vertical=1, Horizontal=1, Opacity= 78, Blur = 1.00. Selections, Select none. SAVE! We will Repeat this same step with each layer of the Front Shingles. Do this for Barn Front shingles 2 Through number 10. Remember to use each layer on the layer palette and to save after each step for reassurance.

5. Turn off visibility off background. Then right click and merge visible. Name this Layer Barn Front Shingles. You should have something like the image below.

6. Make sure layer 11 Barn left side is your active layer. Selections load from alpha channel 11 Barn Left Side. click on your pattern layer and change the angle to 90 flood fill with pattern adding the same drop shadow. Deselect and save your work.

7. Click on layer 12 Barn right side, Selections load from Alpha channel load 12 Barn right side. Flood fill with pattern adding the same drop shadow. Deselect and save your work. At this point you will need to decide if you would like to use the deformation tool to move the right side up a bit to be under the roof shingles or leave it as it is. I liked mine a little shorter to show the true rustic home made barn nest.

8. Click on 01 Roof Shingle. I have given you three panels of wood to use as we want a rustic looking barn like bird house you can use all three patterns on different shingles. Go to selections load from alpha channel and load 01 roof shingle. Choose your wood pattern for this in the background layer (you should have all patterns open and on your work area minimized) Set angle at 0 and scale at 100. flood fill the roof shingle. Add the same drop shadow. Deselect and save your work.

9. Repeat The same steps with the remaining Roof shingles Adding the same drop shadow to each one; vary your wood patterns so we have a nice rustic look to this Birdhouse Barn. Save Often. Below is a screen shot with the shingles. You may choose to change the way your shingles are set up a bit as I have done in mine. It is up to you how you choose the angles, after you flood fill them and deselect, you can use the deformation tool to change the angle. The selections are only a guide line to go by.

7. Close Visibility on all layers except for your roof shingles and merge these layers visible and rename then Roof shingles. You may turn the visibility back on for your front shingles and left and right barn sides.

8. Turn on visibility for 06 Roof Easement. You may use my pattern or one of your choosing. This was a hard match to make to find something to look nice here. I looked through all sorts of hardware magazines and advertisements and could only find this one that will work. Selections Load from Alpha Channel 06 Roof Easement, flood fill with your pattern choice. I have chosen a rust looking color for a metal roof maybe. Take your lighten darken brush while still selected and lighten the easement in some areas and darken in others no particular area or pattern we are looking for a worn look here. My easement hung over on the right side a bit I just took the deform tool and pulled it in a bit. you may need to do this also.

9. Almost done now. lets put the steeple together. Turn on visibility of 14 Steeple Front. Load/Save selections Load from Alpha Channel 14 Steeple Front. Using Your Front shingles pattern with angel set at 90 and scale at 35 flood fill this selection. Keep selected and use the same drop shadow on this as we used before.Deselect. Click on the Steeple Top layer and make this layer visible. Load the selection from alpha channel 15 Steeple while selected add the same drop shadow. Deselect and save your work. You should have something hopefully similar to the image below.

10. Now for some fun. Only a couple of steps left now. Did you pick out your birds nest yet. Better decide in a few minutes. Click on layer 13 Inside Barn wall. Load from alpha channel 13 Inside barn wall, I used one of the Roof shingle woods you can use this or something of your own choosing.

11.Click on the birds nest layer and make it visible. Move into place. You can use my birds nest or shop around for another in a tube. The only Robin tube I have found on the net is at Kandy Kisses Or add another one to your birdhouse barn.

12. Click on layer 16 Left Door. Selections Load/Save Selections, Load from Alpha Channel Selection 16 Left door. I used a the Front Shingle pattern that is in the download. Angle 90 And Scale set at 50. You can use the same one or another pattern. Leave selected and add the same Drop shadow from before. Deselect and Save your work.

13. Click on layer 17 Right Door. Selections Load/Save Selections, Load from Alpha Channel Selection 16 Left door. Use the same pattern we used for the Front shingles or another one of your choosing Leave selected and add the same Drop shadow from before. Deselect and Save your work.

You can now click on your top layer then Right click and merge Visible. You can tube this and save to folder of choice or export to your tubes folder. What A Great Job You did on this..... You can even decorate this with something like Flowers etc. I think a Vine would look really great.
